US PERFORMER TRAVELS TO THE MIDDLE EAST TO SING FOR ARABIC CHILDREN
What better way to bridge the cultural gap between the US and the Middle East then to start with music and with children? For this reason, one Pennsylvania-based performer is spending two weeks playing music from around the world as well as helping a group of 225 young Arabic children (ages 5 – 12), create their own blend of music that they can share with their community and the world.
Although she has traveled to 14 different countries abroad, this summer will be the first time DARIA (Daria Maramluk-Hajioannou) has had a chance to perform for Arabic audiences. On a special invitation from the municipality of Nazareth (Israel) and the director of a unique camp for Arabic kids, DARIA will be in the town of Nazareth from July 1 to July 15th; teaching, playing and learning new songs as well. At the end of the two weeks, the children will present a concert for their families and community that will feature the new songs and ideas they have created in the camp.
“One of my favorite parts of my career is that I can visit groups of children and find out what song they LOVE to sing in their own language. Then, I can share those special songs with the next country, or the next group of school children that I get to meet.
Says Daria: “ One song we will work on is called “Assalam Alechim”, it is a traditional Arabic greeting meaning – “Peace Be Upon You”. The response is “ Alechim Assalam” (Upon You, Peace). The leader of the camp; an advocate for peace in the Middle East named Kamel Barghouti, has been actively creating this camp for eight years. During that time, he has followed the theory of “teaching through smiles” where children learn from US volunteers who teach immersion English through fun and games, in a happy and positive way. He emphasizes that this is an Arabic English Language camp, because he feels English will serve as a passport to the world for young Arab children – allowing them to way to reach out and share their ideas and culture with others in a way that is affirming and empowering.
Daria, now completing her third cd of multi-lingual music for kids, will perform at this year’s MUSIKFEST in Bethlehem (Pennsylvania, USA) and widely throughout the area in the fall.
